What is EPDM?

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer is a synthetic sheet rubber membrane that is not affected by extremes of temperature. It will not tear, split or crack with age, it repels all moisture, rain and snow. EPDM can stretch with up to 300% elongation, which easily accommodates any building movements or temperature fluctuations. It is manufactured in large sheet sizes from 15m wide up to 61m long (ordered to roof size). It is flexible and easily bends without stress to follow contours of roof.

How long will an EPDM roof last?

In Europe and America, EPDM flat roofs are common and have been used for about 30 years. Tests have been carried out on roofs of this age and they still exceed the results demanded by the material standard DIN 7864. It is established therefore that EPDM roofing systems have a life span well in excess of 40 years.

How does it differ from a traditional felt roof?

You are probably familiar with the traditional flat roof and might be aware of it’s inherent flaws. There are many reasons for this but the main fault is that a felt roof consists of one metre wide strips of felt seamed together on the roof leaving lots of joins. The second is that a felt roof usually needs some variation of stone chippings to hide the base layer of bitumen from the sun. When the bitumen base layer heats up it begins to melt, and then cools. This continual process over time causes the bitumen to crack and break down causing leaks.
An EPDM rubber roof gets away from all this. How? Well for starters the EPDM is pre-cut to the size of your roof and is most cases is delivered in ONE Piece; this means there are no seams required during installation. A rubber roof does not require stones or aggregate of any kind to conceal it from the sun as it is a U.V stable product.
